While he persued portraiture, his first love, concentrating on realistic paintings including special studies in anatomy, he further developed his talent by studying other styles including impressionism, surrealism, cubism, and modern art. Hessam notes he was influenced in general by Italy’s artistic atmosphere, but more specifically because "colors were bright and the atmosphere was quiet and relaxed."

During a five year return to his native Persia, Hessam's work began changing - showing less realism and more movement. After another brief stay in Italy, he emigrated to the United States where he has lived since. His current work is characterized by vibrant colors, dynamic composition, and powerful expression that go hand in hand with imagination and expert craftsmanship.
